De Beers Flies
the South African Flag

De Beers operates in a number of countries around the world, and with its roots in South Africa and the company being one of the founding members of the Kimberley Process, the country’s chairing of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) presented an ideal opportunity for De Beers to reaffirm its commitment to South Africa, and indeed, the Kimberley.

This could not have come at a better time, considering that 2013 is the 10th anniversary of the KPCS and the second time that South Africa chairs the Kimberley Process.

De Beers is also actively involved with the KPCS, represented by DBCM Chairman, Barend Petersen, and De Beers Head of International Relations, Andy Bone. The company’s support for the KPCS included a sponsorship for the 10th anniversary celebrations and the showcasing of the company’s long standing contribution to facilitating beneficiation in South Africa, through the Shining Light Awards jewellery collection, and De Beers’ commitment to driving the growth of jewellery brand locally, through Forevermark.

The KPCS annual programme also includes two major events, the first being the Intersession meeting that takes place in June, which provides an opportunity for the various Kimberley Process working groups to present an update on the work that they are doing in-line with the objectives that have been set for that particular year. The second event is the Plenary session that takes place in November, where each working group presents its final submission as follow up from the June Intersession meeting. Both these sessions happen over a period of a week in the host country.

One of the key events that takes place during the Intersessions and the Plenary is the gala dinner, which are attended by participating countries’ government Ministers and dignitaries. During the Intersession gala dinner that was held in Kimberley on 4 June this year, De Beers showcased the Forevermark jewellery pieces and a limited range of the Shining Light Awards jewellery collection, with the intention showcasing the full range at the Plenary gala dinner scheduled for November.

As planned, and to the delight of those in attendance, , De Beers showcased 35 Shining Light Awards jewellery pieces and dressed the Minister in the Department of Mineral Resources, Ms Susan Shabangu, and key female dignitaries at the function with diamond jewellery.  The dinner was honoured by the presence of the Deputy President of South Africa, Mr. Kgalema Motlanthe, who was also the keynote speaker. De Beers was represented by Barend Petersen, Varda Shine, Paul Rowley, Anglo American South Africa Executive Director, Khanyisile Kweyama, Mpumi Zikalala and other De Beers senior managers.

De Beers is indeed proud of its involvement with the Kimberley Process, as expressed by Barend Petersen during his speech at the Intersession gala dinner when he said; “One of the key achievements of the KP is that it was a bold and innovative demonstration of Africa's ability to deliver its own, home-grown solutions and the South African government is to be congratulated for its vision and its leadership. The governments that initiated the KP, together with civil society organisations and mining and other diamond industry related companies have good reason to be proud.

“That is why, in spite of the challenges the KP faces, it is still held up as a working example of international and cross-sector co-operation. Data sharing and the international review missions to troubled countries being practical and valuable additions to its role functions which help keep those who stray on the road to ‘good’. Today, there are 54 participants representing 81 countries who are part of this great initiative, this is an achievement that we as an industry should be proud of.”
